There are many reasons your vehicle’s Check Engine Light (CEL) comes on. The Check Engine Light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), is a signal from the vehicle’s Engine Control Module (ECM) that something is wrong. It could be anything from a bad catalytic converter to a loose gas cap. At minimum, you will need to diagnose the problem and locate the issue.

What is the Check Engine Light (CEL)?

Prior to 1996, carmakers had their own engine diagnostic systems, primarily to ensure their cars were compliant with Environmental Protection Agency pollution-control requirements. Starting with model-year 1996, automakers standardized their systems under a protocol called OBD-II, which stipulated a standardized list of diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and mandated that all cars provide a universal connector to access this information.

When the vehicles electronic-control system finds a problem it cannot adjust, the computer turns on a yellow or amber warning indicator and stores a trouble code in its on-board computer diagnostic system memory. These Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) can be read with a scan tool or diagnostic computer to help identify the likely source of the problem, such as a malfunctioning sensor or an engine misfire. If the Check Engine Light is steady, the problem is typically not an emergency, but should be addressed as soon as possible. A blinking Check Engine Light usually indicates a more severe issue such as an engine misfire.
