ECM Basics
An Electronic Control Module (ECM) is a broad term that encompasses any embedded system that controls one or more electrical systems in a motor vehicle. In modern cars, there can be over 80 different modules that are responsible for a particular electronic function. For example, the Transmission Control Module, or TCM, is a type of ECM that controls the operation of your transmission.
A number of sensors throughout your car are inputted into the ECM, which is then able to examine the data and implement an optimal operating strategy. Other common types of ECM’s include:
- General Electronic Module (GEM)
- Brake Control Module (BCM)
- Engine Control Module (ECM)
- Suspension Control Module (SCM)
- Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
- Central Timing Module (CTM)
