ECU Basics
The Engine Control Module (ECM), also know as an Engine Control Unit (ECU), is a type of Electronic Control Module that is responsible for maintaining optimal engine performance. The ECU receives data from a number of sensors, which is interpreted using multidimensional performance maps (lookup tables). Following each reading, the engine actuators are adjusted accordingly. An example of components that are controlled by the Engine Control Unit include:
- Air/Fuel Ratio
- Anti-Theft Control
- Cruise Control
- Electronic Valve Control
- Idle Speed
- Ignition Timing
- Variable Valve Timing
Modern ECUs have a microprocessor that can monitor and process the various engine sensors in real-time. The ECU also has the capability to communicate with other modules to ensure optimal performance across all electrical components of the vehicle.
