PCM Basics
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is a type of Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that determines the amount of fuel, ignition timing and other parameters an internal combustion engine needs to keep running. This is done by reading values from multidimensional performance maps, using input values (e.g. engine speed) calculated from signals coming from sensor devices monitoring the engine.
On average, PCMs control more than 100 key factors in each vehicle. They are often combined with the ECU and TCU to form a control unit, and together they work as the “brain” of the engine control system.
